The Cloth Of Night Poem by Peter Russell

The Cloth Of Night

Black pearls and velvet
Hurled down by the night
A ray of haematite
From Mars the warrior-planet

White moonlight with a stannous gleam
A beam of almost azure fur
The silvery fire of Jupiter -
Cold flame in unwavering stream

Dark wings that seem to beat
The downy clouds and stain them brown,
To weave with beads a starry gown
And drop it softly at my feet

Crumpled it lies upon the ground
And gathers into shadowy lumps,
Which the bright Sun, rising by jumps
Hides from my eyes without a sound.
