The Deeed Is Done

Rating: 2.0

'The deed is done! '
Elektra ends.
It’s kinda fun
the way it bends
the minds of those
who sit suspended
in silent rows
until it’s ended.

Elektra kills
again her mother,
Orestes chills
the blood, her brother.
Sophocles
writes quite a drama,
while using keys
of ancient grammar
that’s Greek to those
for whom the death
by sibling blows
bereaves the breath.

It's done, the deed!
once more we see
the parents bleed,
and must agree
when actors bow
and words are pale
the Greeks knew how
to tell a tale.

A quick reminder:
it's fun––well, kinda.

Peter Marks reviews a new production of Sophocles' “Electra” with Claire Bloom and Zoë Wannamaker at the Barrymore Theater ('A Jolt of Pure Rage, ' the NYT, December 4,1998) . He says that Greek drama does not go in for small talk, subtext or obfuscation 'I want you to taste the bitterness of death, ' says Orestes, moments before murdering Aegisthus.
