The Earth, An Abattoir? Poem by Rajendran Muthiah

The Earth, An Abattoir?

“ My God! Mammoth camels get their throats cut
in the midst of children celebrating, ‘Bakrid’.
Doesn’t it seem horrible Abdul? ”, I asked my friend.
“It’s cowardice! The acts of terrorists slitting the necks
of the captured and telecasting it to shock the world! ”

“ Yes, we’re barbarians and you’re civilized!
We don’t cut the necks of cocks and goats
with a long shining chopper before the eyes of goddesses.
You slit the beautiful heads of cocks which wake you up
every morning with their clarion calls! See their torsos!
They jump up and down till their final fall
recalling your betrayal of trust! Your youths dare to kill
doctors, engineers, teachers and senior citizens
for a bit of land or gold or a bundle of currencies!
Yours are brave acts in a brave new world! ”

“I had no answers for his truthful words.
Even if you build Slaughter-house in every lane
the human animals living here won’t change.
The whole earth is an abattoir for these anti-socials
who don’t discriminate in killing the living beings.
Who can wage against the human arrogance a fight? ”
