The Former Rose Of Yarram Poem by Francis Duggan

The Former Rose Of Yarram

In her early twenties in her prime when her hair was chestnut brown
She was one of the finest in South Gippsland and the Rose of Yarram Town
But now with a light brown hair dye she cloaks her natural gray
And with heavy makeup she conceals her wrinkles of decay.

In her twenties in Yarram Town some forty years ago
She was the pretty woman the young local males wished to know
But time takes care of everyone and she too had her time
And on looking back the years went quick and fleeting was her prime.

Her eldest grandchild in his early twenties and time is ticking on
The former Rose of Yarram Town her better days are long gone
The years have stolen from her some of her beauty but not her self conceit
Nowadays she almost goes unnoticed as she walks down the street.

In Berwick Town she now lives a sixty five years old divorcee
When she was young in Yarram none as beautiful as she
But time takes care of everyone and she too had her day
And with anti ageing creams and brown hair dye she conceals age and decay.
