The Freshly Fallen Snow Poem by bryan wallace

The Freshly Fallen Snow

Footsteps sink softly in fresh virgin snow.
The dull grey roadway temporarily shining
Brilliant white crystallised water reflecting
The brilliant moonlight shining bright
Against the darkness of a winter night's sky.

Hawthorn hedgerows wear a white topping of snow -
Soft, smooth and beautiful like white icing on a cake.
Fields are smothered in a white blanket of snow -
Perfectly layered by nature, filling the ruts,
Making the unevenness even.

Making subtle pictures of beauty and perfection
Below the stillness of the shadow-casting moonlight.
An eerie hush has descended - nothing to be heard
Apart from my snow-muffled footsteps.

Sheep silently take shelter behind a hedge
Wondering what strangeness has happened their world.
Their big moonlight-reflecting eyes peer back at me
In idle curiosity as the cold winter air
Condenses their breath into beautiful smoke-like plumes.

The naked ash tree casts it's long-limbed shadows
On the snow-covered roadway before me as I walk.
The welcoming warm glow of lamp-lit windows
In the distance - the only other sign of human presence.

I have the road and the fields to myself -
Master of all I survey - this winter wonderland
Of natural beauty - Everyone else is tucked up safe and warm,
Freeing up space for myself to contemplate
The natural beauty of my snow covered world.
