The Great List Poem by Scott Gil

The Great List

When do you make the line breaks
who knows what to do or what it takes
Is it Iambic, a sonnet, or prose,
or is it Haiku, who knows?
What makes a great poem
a person who sits at home all alone
how do you become a great poet
to write in the abstract and not know - it
maybe write about sunsets and landscapes
or 18th century antiques and pretty drapes
become an English major, read the classics
or write about today's problems & be sarcastic
after many years - you might get on the great list
amongst all the great poets not in our midst
like Whitman, Frost, Yeats and Poe
Edgar loved dreary topics we all know
your work might get noticed when you are dead
as you thought, who will appreciate me with dread.
