The Grey Veil Poem by David Burton Richardson

The Grey Veil

Deep down amongst the Mist, where dark deep Black prevails
I know not why and i know not when, that i will see the Grey Veil
Disgust and shame are constant Friends, i feel the weight of Mortal means
When all is lost to make ammends and Death and Sorrow will fill my Dreams
And i know not why and i know not when, that i will see the Grey Veil
But tomorrow will come and we must see, like Life itself, the Clouds, the Trees
The Golden Sun, the hazy Breeze, the Song of Birds and the Honey Bees
And i know not why and i know not when, that i will see the Grey Veil
For thoughts will come and thoughts will go, the weight of loss is calling
I see a place that i must go, a place so deep, a place so low
And i know not why and i know not when, that i will see the Grey Veil
And so to be, when all is lost, our lives of slither and slime
I take the stock and count the cost, for there is only one chance this time
And i know not why and i know not when, that i will see the Grey Veil
The Greyest Grey, the Blackest Black, will fill my wanting Head
The thunderous Clouds will Dance right back, and Death Green pallor will wish me dead
And when the place so pure, so true, will see my Soul and Body rest
I'll look around and say to you 'I'm just a Man who failed the test'
And i not know why and i know not when, that i will see the Grey Veil.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
Having suffered from self doubt and Depression all my life i began to call this illness the 'Grey Veil', because that is exactly how it feels to me, like a Grey Veil over my Face, even on the most beautiful sunny days. Everything appears Grey, cloudy and dark. There is no cure, no magical pill to take. But it is what enables me to create and appreciate even the darkest parts of life.
