The Happy One Poem by Francis Duggan

The Happy One

To some he is the idiot of the town
A silly man and at least an unpaid clown
He laughs aloud at jokes they cannot see
Or could it be the humorous one is he?

He's sixty years carefree as happy boy
And every moment of life he enjoy
But he's a retard the most callous say
And they can't see that he's happier than they.

If I knew half the happiness he know
I'd not be scared to let my feelings show
I'd laugh at joke that others would think dry
And every moment of life I'd enjoy.

And of all of the hang ups I have I'd feel free
And I'd not care what others would say of me
And I'd not feel conscious if my voice seemed loud
And I would laugh out in the silent crowd.

He laughs at jokes that others think quite dry
And every moment of life he enjoy
And he's the happiest fellow in the town
And the idiots are those who put him down.
