The Heart Whispers Poem by Katniss Everdeen

The Heart Whispers

My heart has frozen over
I promised not to cry
As I walked up to you
to say my last goodbye

'I know you think you love me
But your feelings are not true
We can not be together
I do not care for you'

My words are harshly spoken
But they're words that must be said
These words make my heart feel wrong
Broken, empty, dead.

'I just don't love you any more
You're sure to soon discover
That it's really not your fault
I have just found another'

'I just can not condemn
Living this way any longer'
These words cut him like a knife
But soon, they'll make him stronger

The tears flow freely down his face
But not a single word is spoken
He's probably remembering all the promises
That I have now broken

My heart breaks
Again, again and again
I never thought I would feel
This kind of pain

I put on a brave face
And continue to hurt my love
'You're better off without me'
He looks to the sky above

'But babe, wait, please'
He begs 'We belong together'
I shake my head, more tears come
'But babe, you said 'forever'

'I lied, okay? I lied
We're not how we used to be
there's no careless laughter and jokes
We're not young, wild and free'

'We're not children any more
And nothing lasts forever
There is nothing left between us
Nothing whatsoever'

I place a single kiss upon his cheek
And wipe away a tear
Five more words to break his heart
'We're over, is that clear? '

I walk away to his distant sobs
Caused by words that were untrue
My brain screams at me 'Who cares? '
But my heart whispers 'You do'
