The Hostage Poem by Lora Colon

The Hostage

Rating: 5.0

Your thoughts and desires held me hostage,
I struggled to break away,
But they refused to release their hold,
And the ransom was too high to pay

Slowly, you dragged me down to the pit,
Where your darkness latched onto me;
And I stood helpless as you locked the gate,
But what did you do with the key!

I've been here much too long now,
In the darkness, it's so hard to see;
Now and then a ray of light gets in,
And when I see you, I see me

I surrendered my desire to escape,
My decline is past all concern;
I'm making the best of this errant life,
Somewhere, there's a lesson to learn

I get more comfortable everyday,
Now and then I even sing;
I can't go back to where I've been,
I wouldn't recognize a thing

Love the lines ' I can't go back to where I have been! I wouldn't recognize a thing'. Moving forward is all we can do. Lovely poem.

An expertly penned tale of one released from darkness and despair into tomorrows sunlight. A very uplifting attiude in perspective. I like your simplistic, direct way of writing

This is a fantastic poem! Smooth, free flowing, captivating like your hostage taker. 'My decline is past all concern; I'm making the best of this errant life, Somewhere, there's a lesson to learn' These three lines touched me deepest! 'Now and then I even sing; I can't go back to where I've been, I wouldn't recognize a thing' These three lines make me feel sad.
