The Irish Still Remember Poem by Francis Duggan

The Irish Still Remember

His army callous killers left a trail of blood and shame
Yet street signs on streets and avenues still bear the cruel man's name
And why he should be remembered I will never understand
As he did some cruel and bad things to the people of Ireland.

He dispossessed the tenant farmers and Connacht the only place to go
And the poor of Ireland suffered and no mercy he did show
To hell or else to Connacht was his favourite catch cry
And the poor forced from their hovels on the roadside left to die.

His atrocities in Ireland history tend to overlook
Dispossessed the tenant farmers and their houses from them took
And in Ireland he's remembered for the evil things he done
And the Irish remember Cromwell as the cruel and callous one.

He's got streets and avenues called after him but he was far from great
And the Irish still remember and him they have good cause to hate
And the name of Oliver Cromwell doesn't seem worthy of renown
As he did bad things in Ireland in the name of the British crown.
