The Jewish Calendar Poem by Jonathan Goldman a.k.a JGthepoet

The Jewish Calendar

The Jewish Calendar starts each year
In the month of Nisan,
For in that month, Passover is,
When G-D gave HIS People their Freedom.

Seven weeks onwards from Passover,
In the Jewish Month of Sivan,
We celebrate Shavuot then,
When the Commandments at Sinai were given.

In the Month of Av we commemorate
Solemn Days when the Temples were destroyed,
First in 586BCE by the Babylonians,
Then again in 70CE by the Romans.

Ellul leads to Tishrei,
To Solemn Days of prayer,
When Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
Bring Jews to Shuls everywhere.

Also in Tishrei is Succot,
When we make for ourselves Booths,
To eat in, as if in the Wilderness,
And use the Lulav and Etrog in Shuls.
