The Modern Shroud

Of the five that could have won the prize,
four are good for what they’re about
and any could have won
if the fifth was good for the same;

but ‘The Modern Shroud’ is the one that won—

big, all right, bigger than the others combined;
definitely done in one session;
not good for what it’s about;
good for what it’s not about—

for leaving a lasting impression.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
After seeing 'The Great Beauty' and the Adelaide Biennial at the Art Gallery of South Australia, I dreamt of a painting that won a prize.
