The Morning Air Poem by Casey O'Sheridan

The Morning Air

Autumn
Oh to smell-no! To taste the morning air!
The deliciously crisp and sweet air for which I long
Breezes carry the tantalizing aroma, hypnotizing my senses
Unable to resist I succumb to the embrace tender and strong
To the roaring fire I am helplessly drawn
The crackling flames consume trees in colorful hue
The intoxicated breezes now turned wind spread the destruction
Until winters breath none will be quenched by rain nor dew

Winter
Icy tendrils surround me-I cannot escape
Darkness, the last thing my crazed eyes see as I am dragged under
Frigid fingers wrap around my lungs like a vice
Sucking dry all color and warmth then moving on for more life to plunder
Then like Jeckel and Hyde the calm prevails
I look around me and see beauty where seconds ago was an abyss
A now peaceful sea of silver, a world sprinkled with confectioners sugar
In disbelief I stare, how can something so treacherous look like this? !

Spring
Oh can you taste all these wondrous colors? !
Juicy reds and tart yellows, spicy greens and sweet blues
Smell the swishing skirts of petals as the flowers dance
Can you hear the aromatic songs and ballads sent to bees as clues?
Infectious hope for joyous new life soon to be rich and full spreads swiftly
Romances’ impossible but enticing games will once again start
The giddy delight of young and old is contagious-none are immune
Warmth floods anew loosening the chilled grip on my heart

Summer
The heat! The scorching, pulsing heat steals my breath
It snuck in, disguising itself as pleasant in the morn
But now the only glimpse of escape is in shadow or tepid water
All is wrapped in a cocoon-resistance is futile, strength is torn
Movement becomes sluggish-will comfort ever return?
Ah, see in the distance? A rustling-a breeze! But beware!
All that is felt is the hot breath of the beast as it roars
Oh to smell-no! to taste the morning air!
