The National Assembly Poem by Celestine Nkwocha

The National Assembly

What have we got here?
Elders whose gathering brings us fear!
No! the nations burden they claim they loyally bear
They are the branches which make the nations tree
Hmm! the tree meant to set us burden free
Has forsaken us to heed greed unjust plea
We gave it great waters
But instead of growing flowers
Great thorns it inevitably gave as showers

Enough of personified expressions
I care less about punishments or sanctions
Since our hopes they kept afloat
Timidity's door I now must bolt
And without fear go straight to the note:

We gave them legitimate power
This unleashed before the next hour
The avaricious beast locked within greed's tower
Their actions have made us realize
That they are but baboons in human disguise
Using us as monkeys to achieve their edacious prize
Tell me, what is forth coming from the national assembly?
The delay of the masses needs certainly
And the embezzling of oil money surely.
These they did with perfect alacrity
Inspired by nothing but devilish audacity
But any one who exploits the masses
Gathers for himself nothing but generational curses
