The Penny Candy Poem by Robert Rorabeck

The Penny Candy

Remember the traces in the shallows,
The words that it was alright
To give for one last day—
Before the last holiday of our lives
Looking out into other worlds, separate:
Made to keep us apart underneath
The moonlight, like a knife over the
Railroad tracks,
And the airplanes like silver angels
Over the penny candy
Of my hopes.
