The Race To Greatness Poem by Shalom Freedman

The Race To Greatness

THE RACE TO GREATNESS

I am still in it
I am still on my feet
I am still going
They have not defeated me yet
True I am next to nowhere still
True there is no sign I will ever get there
True there have been many signs
That I do not deserve to get there-
True the evidence after all the years says
I am not worthy-

But I have not given up
I am still going -
Dad I will make it for both of us
Somehow still out of nowhere perhaps
I will do it-
Perhaps I have already done it
And it just waits to be discovered-

But I won't give up
I will keep going
Greatness will be mine yet
Our justification will be here
Dad you will be proud of me
I will like a colossus stand above the world-
Greatness will be mine yet
Even if I know while writing these lines
That I will go to my grave a pretentious fool
Who could not accept what a small and poor writer he was.
