The Rose That Grew From Concrete Poem by Patrick Utitufon

The Rose That Grew From Concrete

(following Tupac Shakur)

I
Have you heard about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete when all hope was lost that it put forth its tendrils against Nature's laws?
Quietly, it weathered its way through the crevice it created within the concrete's crust, its tendrils though tender…
And standing its ground, it did see the light of day
and blossomed in its due season when no one else ever cared!
Have you seen the rose that grew from concret

II
I am the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete
left to forage in the wilderness called Life.
Scourged by the Sun,
tossed back and forth like chaff by the whirlwinp
whom nobody cared about…
Without hope, against all odds, I sprang up empty,
shattered and desiccated amidst uncertainties…
But then you came,
you gave me life: earth, light, breath and watered me;
you gave me solace and showed me love.
So I took the bull by the horns,
I called a spade a spade;
and that has made all the difference…
