The Ruins Poem by Joan Hart

The Ruins

This structure
Was beautiful,
An intricate weaving
Of hearts -
My heart will never be the same.
We didn’t see it coming, this storm
It tore us apart, we collapsed
Left in ruins, unrecognizable
Standing here in the rubble,
Nothing is whole.
I remember the before - we thought ourselves indestructible
A foundation pure and strong
I remember
And I ache.
Are you haunted as I am?
Sometimes I feel like a fool,
This structure has long since come and gone
And many others have replaced it.
But the tiny shards of glass I step on,
From time to time,
They remind me -
They have left their scars.
