The Scab Of Grief Poem by Mark Bratlie

The Scab Of Grief

It's always bad to pick a scab
before the healing's finished
Instead let nature take its course
that the scar may be diminished

To push too soon for normalcy
may cause the hurt to linger
While patience often helps to heal
one's spirit as well as finger

A person's spirit may be injured
through the loss of one held dear
And numbness and denial
serve to block the pain and fear

Yet, when the pain does break through
with excruciating rage
It helps if one can recognize
the normalcy of this stage

The next step may lead to bargaining
with hopes of undoing despair
And it may take time and patience
to accept the grief you bear

The depths of depression and lonliness
will demand attention from you
And it may be quite hard to accept this
as a struggle you can move through

Acceptance and hope lie around the bend
where renewal is waiting for you
Though the journey is not quick nor smooth
patience will see you through

So, it's best not to pick the scab of grief
before the stages have passed
Letting the healing take its course
leads to hope and growth at last
