The Soul Poem by Isam Hussain

The Soul

Beauty and ugliness indwell the same home,
compassion and cruelty reside within its walls,
murder and salvation freely roam its halls,
knowledge and ignorance its corridors roam.

Enlightenment and bigotry within it reside,
meanness and generosity walk side by side,
together they form a dysfunctional family
held together by the bond of hypocrisy.

Who would like to join their company?
Who would condone their acts of infamy?
Surely not you or I;
But we do, bar a few.

This is the human soul
of both the wise and the fool.
Pity, we are such mixed up beings.
