Hi Adam, From my understanding, Emily Dickinson selects one and shuts the door to the rest even to the Emperor who be kneeling upon her mat. Her soul is so elevated to see the love/friend and not the vast nation. In her real life she acted that way too! One of the Iranian scholars named her daughter of Molana (Rumi) . I also like to share a short poem that I wrote as a tribute to Emily Dickinson:
I see you through your verses, when you stir alone.
I found a way to acknowledge you,
when your soul selects her own society
    the wind confirms you
the trees, the earth, the tears
and the people's awakening confirms you.
why I am searching you, if you are everywhere? (Report) Reply

The poem is very powerful, but the reciting is somewhat robotic. Plus adds do not suit poetry. Just my opinion. (Report) Reply

I'm doing a project on Emily Dickinson for my 11th grade American Literature class, and i need to find a poem by Miss Emily Dickinson and then analyze it, i chose this poem, but i don't really understand it, so if anybody could please explain it to me and help me to better understand it, i would be extremely grateful.
