The Sportsman Of The Year Poem by Weldon Davis

The Sportsman Of The Year

I've swam over oceans
Journeyed over continents
Wrestled with lions
And my demons

Along the way
Made friends of enemies
And
Enemies of friends

I've gorged on cornucopias
And got by on the
Barest of substances

Racked my brain
Over the trifle-lest of vanities
And pondered life's deepest
Conundrums

I've seen a lot these
Past couple of years
And I never
Would have made it
I never would have
Made it
Without you
My dreams
My dreams kept me alive
At times I felt so alone
And there was no light
At the end of my tunnel
So I dreamed
-And-
In dreaming
I searched far into my conscience
For that meaning
For that inspiration
To keep fighting
When I wanted so badly to give up

My story is far from over
And no!
Jail nor prison do not define me
It's knowing that regardless where I go
And what adversities face me
I stay the same
Yet
Elevate my standards even higher
When those that wish me harm
Try to degrade me

I am the beacon of freedom
The constant
The survivor
I am
The sportsman of the year
