The Town's Old Man Of Rhyme Poem by Francis Duggan

The Town's Old Man Of Rhyme

One must go back some fifty years since he was in his prime
And time is catching up on him the Town's old man of rhyme
His poems now few and far between his pen is moving slow
His inspiration well is running dry 'twas full long years ago.

The local happenings years ago to poetry him did inspire
And of writing good old fashioned stuff he never seemed to tire
He penned just for the love of rhyme not for wealth or renown
Though he even has lost his title now as the laureate of the town.

To one in her mid twenties that title does belong
And at social gatherings he is never called upon to recite or sing a song
He had his glory in the past but suppose such is life
He is at home most of the time with his poor aged wife.

He walks now with a walking cane and his better days long gone
And yet the town's old man of rhyme he keeps on keeping on
At social gatherings years ago his poems he did recite
But the poetess young and beautiful is now in the limelight.
