The True Veteran Poem by William Levy

The True Veteran

A man came to me at a gas station
asking for change.
He said he needed gas so he could get home.
I didn't believe him.

But something came over me.
It wasn't fear
it was generosity.
I checked in my wallet for a dollar,
and found two ten dollar bills instead.
He said a dollar was fine,
but that wasn't what I had.
So I gave him ten.

He was so thankful,
and as I drove away I watched him fill up.

I regret it.

generosity came over me i didn't ask for it i regret giving him money i earned and just because i watched fill up didn't mean i was content it just meant he was honest about his intentions with the money (The TRUE Veteran)

I got the theme but the last line - I regret it - simply deceived me. What do you actually mean by it? You were watching him fill his gas with contentment and then you end the poem like this. What do you actually mean?
