The Truth About Love Poem by Nick Downer

The Truth About Love

-I admit I wrote this poem at a slightly bitter and cynical point in my life-

So, everybody wants to know
what the truth about love is.
Is it wonderful?
Amazing?
Does it make you feel alive?
Well, here's a secret.
I've figured out what the truth about love is.
The truth about love is that
it's none of those things.
Not even close.
Love is something better left untouched.
You touch it and you have
instantly set yourself up to fall.
Love leaves you feeling,
something that nothing else can make you feel.
The truth about love is that
it sucks you in
and grabs it's icy hand around you
and will only let you go
once it's frozen your heart.
Love leaves as quickly as it comes
and the moments in between
only haunt you later.
They whisper and creep around in the darkness
and you wonder how
they ever felt so wonderful at the time,
because all you can feel now is
the incredible pain they cause.
Love doesn't coincide with words
like amazing, incredible, unbelievable,
those are all to big
for such a small word.
No, it's small four-letter frame
parallels words like evil, hurt, pain...
The truth about love?
There is no truth,
just a false mirage of happiness
that doesn't exist.
