The United Nations? Poem by Saqib Hussain, author of Contemplate and Sweet Bird

The United Nations?

Shhh...be quiet, don't say a word
And like a statue, be so still
While the world is in another crisis
Countries destroyed, people killed

In the midst of horrifying disaster
Being so weak and ineffective is our art
They call us the United Nations
But we've watched the world fall apart

Remember Rwanda? Over a million murders
A sickening, ghastly genocide
We do so little to help that it seems
We just stand around and supervise

Remember Srebenica? The shameless massacre
Of innocent women, children and men
When the time came to defend we ran
We're the same now as we were then

Remember Sri Lanka? Tens of thousands killed
Yet another blood soaked land
We let it happen, as we do best
So listen carefully, please understand

That when we say we'll help you
The truth is, we probably won't
And when we ask you to trust us
The best advice is, don't

Look now, hundreds of thousands of refugees
Fleeing from Syria, Afghanistan, devastating war
We stay so quiet as they suffer so much
We see them in front of us and still ignore

Shhh...be quiet, don't say a word
And like a statue, be so still
While the world is in another crisis
Countries destroyed, people killed
