The Woman Who Cried Poem by Cecelia GrantPeters

The Woman Who Cried

The woman who cried.....
Read the newspaper
Did the Crossword
Changed the bed sheets
Loaded the dishwasher
Took the washing from the line
And Cried.

The woman who cried.....
Rode on the bus to work
Checked her emails
Spoke to Clients
Toyed with the ‘Like' button on Facebook
And Cried.

The woman who cried.....
Collected her children from school
Prepared their tea
Read the letters from the school
Washed the school uniform
Read them a bedtime story
Watched as they fell gently into sleep
And Cried.

The woman who cried.....
Chastised her man
Mopped up the blood and vomit
Threw the bottles in the wheelie bin
Snatched his cigarettes
Inhaled his cannabis
Choked on the fumes
And Cried.

The woman who cried.....
Called for an ambulance
Gave a statement to the Police
Spoke to the nice Domestic Violence Lady
Re-read the paperwork
Watched as her man was placed in the Police car
And Cried.

The woman who cried.....
Signed the Divorce Petition
Went for a coffee
Read a short story
Posted a letter
Went for a walk
Basked in the sunshine
And Cried.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I met the 'woman who cried' 2 years ago. I approached her after I heard about her suicide attempt. She seemed well presented and quite composed. She told me that she had carried on with life at home and work and even during time with her friends and family she would take a moment alone to 'cry'...I told her I understood and am happy to report that she now cries tears of joy. This poem has been published in Glow Magazine and also reviewed in The Criterion Literary Journal in India.
