The World Belies, Confounds Poem by Dr John Celes

The World Belies, Confounds

What seems a happy family to
The world is not quite true at all;
What seems a smile upon a face
Has sordid stories underneath.

The things you see can dupe your eyes,
And what you hear may not be truth;
Our human senses fail at times
To see the heart of things around.

At times, you can’t know truth from lies;
Your conscience can’t tell what’s wrong;
Our life on earth is chequered much,
Like sun-beams falling through tree-leaves.

Our wisdom can’t help us always;
The truth evades our faculties;
Nevertheless, we try our best
To keep the righteous road on earth.
