There Is A Country Poem by Chukwuemeka Ogbu

There Is A Country

Again sighs break the silence…
With groans stopping ears
Another bomb rips the ribs…
Whose blood must manure this lot?
Smoke rising from the north,
Newly widowed women wailing,
‘Come home! ’ to Martyrs gone home.
Listen!
The war drums rouse young bloods…
Enraged spirits throb, threaten to burst forth -
In the country whose flag is the rag,
Man’s life is worth a wing of a butterfly
Must we lend steps to the bloody dance?

Arise! compatriots
There must be another country
Though tears drench your cheeks
And your feet tread the swelling heap of human carcass
Make your guns into goods
And ferrets into farming rakes
Bring your turban, your scarf or your hijab
Neither the Naira nor Nigeria shall near end
Rise to the unity of nationhood
There was a country, but,
There is a country!
