They Fell Around Me Poem by Esnala Banda

They Fell Around Me

They fell around me,
Rippling through the dark silence,
The sky lit up, then black again;
... Still.

I called out,
And silence answered me,
The dust choked me,
My breath run short.
They fell again;
Deafening.

The sky burned, deep amber,
With fear i wondered
Was it the gods' deep anger?
Through the streets,
A river began to run.
A smooth trickle down the hill.
A river not of water;
Of blood.

Blood of matyrs,
Blood of saints,
Blood of innocents,
Of the strong willed and faint hearted.

Wandered around, half blind.
Another flash, burned through the sky,
More clouds of smoke,
Clouds of dust,
Shards of shrapnel
All around.

Sharp silence,
You could taste the fear.
The dust settled,
Stinging eyes peered through the smoke.

What was left after they fell?
A desert,
of shrapnel, wood and brick,
And a graveyard.
Bodies upon bodies,
Limbs upon limbs.

They fell around me....
