They Lost It All Poem by Kim Barney

I was born in a bank - - my mother went there and made a deposit

They Lost It All

Their bus caught fire
and burned to the ground
Consumed in four minutes
Only the steel frame was left

Luckily no one died
One or two were injured
They escaped with
the clothes on their backs

Many lost all their money
Others lost cameras and cell
phones, suitcases, extra clothes
and their important documents

They had to stand
by the side of the road
for over an hour waiting
for their replacement bus

Finally the bus arrived
Now they had a choice
Return to Fortaleza
or continue to Recife

Every single one
All forty-eight of them
voted to go to Recife to
complete their temple ordinances

They lost some worldly goods
but perhaps they gained
something of much more value

They Lost It All

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
True story. The day before yesterday (05 October 2015) the bus bringing the caravan from the Fortaleza Benfica Stake caught fire. They were able to get the suitcases out of the bottom part of the bus before it burned, but those who had things stored in the overhead bins lost everything, I was told.
Some arrived here with literally nothing more than the clothes on their backs. They lost their documents, identity papers, money, everything.
