This Story Too Small (1998) Poem by Francis Duggan

This Story Too Small (1998)

We hear a lot of late about Bill Clinton
Of his infedilities to Hilary his wife
And though scandals of the famous sell newspapers
There are far more important things in life.

Like the deaths of all those seals pups in New Zealand
Seven hundred in a colony found dead
A tragic story hardly mentioned by the media
When so much about the Clintons has been said.

It is thought that the seal pups died from algae poisoning
But to make news headlines this story too small
And that New Zealand seals are an endangered species
That doesn't seem to count for much at all.

It would seem us humankind are on a boat to nowhere
We keep on poisoning the seas and land
Than the environment Bill Clinton more important
Forgive me if I do not understand.

The deaths of New Zealand seals seem unimportant
Though their numbers dwindling and they now are rare
To newspapers owners there's more profitable stories
Like a President Clinton extra marital affair.
