Those Marvellous People From Brazil Poem by Francis Duggan

Those Marvellous People From Brazil

They party hard and drink their fill
Those marvellous people from Brazil
And to their sambas dance and sway
And play their drums till break of day.

I'd had a few drinks more than three
And I joined in the gaiety
And I too could not resist their beat
Those drummers had me on my feet.

I am close to sixty looking gray
And I have known a better day
But you are old as you feel so they say
And just for a few hours I felt that way.

People one third of my age on the dance floor
And I danced with them for two hours or more
Until those years did tell on me
I am not the man I used to be.

The beat of drums a vibrant thing
And how those marvellous drummers could sing
They brought their joyous culture with them from Brazil's shore
Ten thousand miles from here or more.

The memory with me remain
I hear them beat their drums again
And I watch the dancers dance and sway
Such good memories last for many a day.

They brought their culture with them something great
A reason for to celebrate
And a reason for to dance and sway
With them until the break of day.

Those marvellous people from Brazil
They beat on their drums and sing until
The dawn lights up the morning sky
We thank them for their gift of joy
