Time & Consequence In Fast Forward Movement {At Cafe 12 Past Midnight}

Objects moved subjectively
in our skewed peripheral spectrums,
through moist, dilated pupils,
one friday night by moon-watch
in a Village space called Greenwich.
Our dreams had yet to peak,
though our thoughts were well blottered,
while we all sat juxtaposed
ass-sore on wine stained crates
in this basement cafe grotto,
'front a stage that stank of Boonesfarm,
our seventies grapes de jour
at a buck ninety-eight a quart,
before quarts kicked in to liters,
and would the featured guest be sober?

Recitations by Bukowski,
applause, a cymbiled concert,
tarnished spoons on bottle necks;
We, 'n Ziggy felt the Stardust -
'neath the streets at Cafe 12.

Curled wafts of gray-white smoke
fixed wandering eyes in skyward,
to the black-strobe washed ceiling,
breathing in the vintaged dust,
mesmerized, anesthesized
to the million blue-black stars
raining over ashwood tables,
while the sweet breath tongue of verse
mixed rhythm, sedating flux
and the punch of sweetest tea -
[with a chaser of spirit jo].

It was nineteen-seventy-six,
Deborah Harry bought us drinks;
we'll always swear she really did
the same year Cronkite told us all
'bout the bloody Jonestown Massacre,
and Da Nang was just a 'conflict',
though Watergate was the skinny
back when vinyl still had spin.

Cat Stevens leaped moonshadows
'fore his peace train sailed mid-east
with some tillermen from Tehran,
for a ticket to advocate
his love for a god who sanctioned war (?)
And the plot against Rushdie,
all while holding the Quran loosely
and praying that the infidels
be banished from his world,
from a mideast mountain top,
overlooking red-stained desert,
in the wake of social cancer -
otherwise known as Terror.

Such is time and consequence -
in fast forward movement.
We thought we could freeze it...,
We Were Wrong, and we knew it-
Or did we....................?
