'Tis Not Quantity Poem by Francis Duggan

'Tis Not Quantity

'Tis not quantity in literature but quality that counts something that I learned decades ago
One of the few subjects on which I feel qualified to speak since I am one who ought to know
As I am one who has written a whole heap of stuff though people like me are not rare
I am not the only poetatser in the World of today of that fact I am all too aware
Oh what I would give for to write just one poem a poem that would long outlive me
Poetasters are many and poets they are few though with that some would disagree
When I was a youngster and I worked in the fields I often daydreamed of literary renown
In Spring when on trees and bushes nesting birds did sing near Millstreet my Duhallow Hometown
But daydreams for many do never come true that's something one does come to know
And I was an innocent country boy then and that was a long time ago
In life you can only give it your best try and my best not quite good enough
At least I do feel I gave it my best try I have written a whole heap of stuff
'Tis not quantity in literature but quality that counts and writers are born not made
But every writer whether famous or not contributes to the Wordsmith trade.
