To Be Me Poem by Alvin Willis

To Be Me

I never wanted to be your best
Cause it felt like it was a test

And I didn’t want to be a choice
For it left me with no clear voice

I didn’t want to be your peace
Even though it gave you strength

I always wanted to be me
So that I may roam free

I never wanted to make idle promises
Cause it took away lost time

And I didn’t want to be a your captor
Cause it felt like I was captive

I didn’t want to be your ray
For it lead me drifting away

I always wanted to be me
So that I may roam free

And yet, there is something to be said for mutual promises. On a different slant read mine - Who Am I - Adeline
