To Speak The Next Word Poem by Dónall Dempsey

To Speak The Next Word

Rating: 4.0

Our faces
floating in darkness
staring at
each other’s eyes
in the darkness
of this eternity
and now
the train

emerging from the tunnel
turns our faces
back into the rather pleasing view
of this passing countryside.
Shyly I dropp my eyes
away from you

you dropp your eyes
away from me
too shy
to face each other now
& eagerly awaiting
the darkness of the next tunnel
so we can gaze again
into each other’s eyes

hoping(both)
to speak
before it is
too late
& the journey
ends.
