Toby Or Not Toby Poem by Tom Billsborough

Toby Or Not Toby

Rating: 2.8

The pottery of earth is often found
In broken shards below the ground.
We excavate old sites
And piece together
The buried pieces of our history.
Our own as well! Our memories
Which scatter in those regions
Of our mind lie buried too,
Our private archaeology
Which others might explore
Hypnotically.
But will they bring to bear
Sufficient care
To avoid distorting what is there
Or will a careless input sway
And damage irreparably
Our shards of history?

There is little need to read your mind Just browsing through your works they will find That your life will open like a book To choose to distort or overlook Thank you for sharing and tickling my mind.

very good. thanks. but, regarding the other compilation ('ODE TO ARTS') , since you are a registered member in that Forum [actually, you are one of the manager] you'd better send the poem to the Forum through an email. This way all members can read it - and, if they wish, they can comment on it, too.

... Tom, this poem of yours could be in the new compilation [I told you of 'Our Chains, Our Dreams' - to be published at the end of Jan. or in Febr.].. what about.. may I add it to the book? Of course, you can choose a different poem - just let me know Ciao F.

I've just managed to misread your message again! I'm always in a hurry. I thought you meant the Ode to the Arts. I've messaged you just now and forwarded the other poem which is more suitable for the Arts' compliation. I gave it a provisional title on PH but would prefer another title Commedia delle Arte hoping my Italian is accurate! And of course, you can use Toby or not to Toby for Our Chains, Our Dreams. Would you submit both poems on my behalf, assuming you like the Commedia poem! Grazie

Oh, yes, indeed, Tom. You have such a wide range of topics that you poetically examine. At one time I wanted to be an archaeologist, maybe unearth the skull of Yorick- if there were only enough time to pursue all avenues of human endeavor. Ah, yes, To be or not to be. To follow this road or that? I like the way you applied archaeology to the human mind and soul. You have an exploring, adventurous mind, Tom. Only you would think of the need for caution to - - - -avoid distorting what is there Or will a careless input sway And damage irreparably Our shards of history? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Well done, Tom!

alas poor Thomas Where be your jibes now.? you know I asked Bill to get my name in his darned play sommewhere but would he? Would he heck. And he was a bit miffed when I suggested that the name Hamlet sounded a bit parochial and why didn't he use Conurbation, much more expansive! That was in one of my previous lives of course. Now back to the subject at hand. My problem at school was that I loved every subject and I think I still do. This led to a certain amount of indecision. There was a snobbish attitude to Science possibly because masters on the Arts side were exclusively Oxbridge men. Archaeology would probably have been an ideal choice as it combines both disciplines. The frailty of memory is fascinating. We have had many cases in the UK where through hypnosis false memories have been planted, mainly in cases of paedophilia, so I was referring to that type of problem. Shakespeare himself was not adverse to tampering with the past to favour his Tudor paymasters. Richard 3rd being a case in point. I guess that's why I prefer Dante and Tolsoi although Shakespeare is a very great writer. I think the others were braver men. Thanks for your comments. Your last contribution was superb by the way and I'll take up your challenge, maybe today
