'Today You Said' Poem by Chris Whitlock

'Today You Said'

Rating: 5.0

Today you said, 'Come on Let's Go! '…
I obeyed because I Love you so…

We drove and drove, I let out a Bark! …
Maybe we will go to the park? ...
My tail was wagging, I was so full of Joy…
Did you bring with us my favorite Toy? …

The car's now stopped; I don't know this place…
Why do you have that look on your face? ...

I hear many friends, but they sound scared…
I jump out of the car, but should I dare…?

You pull on my leash, but kind of strong…
I hope I did not do something wrong…

Now I am scared, I sense danger near…
We walk through the door, and I now feel fear…

You talk and talk - your voice sounds strange…
I don't know what to think, is this just a game? …

You look at me, your eyes so sad…
I hope that I have not been bad…

A man walks up; he bends down on his knee…
I turn from him; 'cause he is not you, I see…

'Come on' he says, and takes my collar…
I look for you, but you're gone...-I holler…! !

'Where are you master? ' I'm scared, and lonely…
This man he pulls me, and then it is only…

The sound of a gate, as it slams shut…
I look for you everywhere but…

I am all alone now, cold and scared…
Where did you go? I know not where…

I bark and bark, but you don't come back…
I wait and wait on the cold floor near a crack…
I can't get comfortable, on my side or my back…

I'm shivering and alone now, and I just don't know…
Today you said, Come on let's Go…

…I obeyed because I love you so.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I wrote this to make people stop and think before they give up their pet to a rescue and also before they consider adopting a dog. My hope is to convince more people to adopt from shelters rather than buying a dog.
