Treading Water Poem by Anthony Burge

Treading Water

Indeed the waters toiled through troubles.

Changing temps from ice boiled bubbles.

Beneath the bridge ebbed tides flowed time.

Rage of torrent doldrums sublime.

Taste salty sea sweat water sweet.

Of currents coursed nay to repeat.

To bathe again calm liquid warm

Would shelter one from life's true storm.

Dare not I surrender to this tide

for where the flow does course this ride.

In dark of night on memories float.

I pull on oars and row my boat.

Upstream against the current strong,

beneath that bridge we passed so long.

As blade of oar does part the skin

of waters troubled from within.

I strive to conjure scent and taste

of sound and sight more speed less haste.

Till summoned by sea sirens song

And so I lust and so I long.
