Tug-O-War Poem by Lyndsey Grant

Tug-O-War

When you are giving
I pull away
Not sure what it means;
Ulterior motives
Are not new to me.
But then I push,
Perhaps too hard,
And you fall back
Armored once again.
So I wonder what it all means,
What we are,
What I am, mostly.
Perhaps I am grossly
Misconstruing some sort
Of illusion that this is the beginning
Of something slow and steady.
But I am ready to jump head first
Into you,
Learn to let loose,
Cutting the strings that I have crisscrossed
Around my heart
Circulation that learned how to stop
When they were not
Given enough of
This thing called what?
Love?
Take your silvery scissors
And cut them apart
Cut me open
Expose this flesh
To yours
Let your eyes penetrate my unsure ness
And cure
All these false purposes
That keep’s me running
Away from you.
Sew me down into your mind
Never forget me when your time is not occupied,
As I cannot forget you.
