Undeserving Poor Poem by Brianna Trombley

Undeserving Poor

Rating: 5.0

They sit there
Starving, nothing to eat
Wet and cold
Nothing more then
Socks with holes on their feet

They have no where to go
And their possessions are few
They’ve tried everything to get by
There’s nothing more they can do

You walk by judging
You’re status makes you feel superior
They represent drug addiction and laziness
Of course they are inferior

But for many homeless
There’s few truth to that fact
Good fortune and prosperity
To them, just does not attract

Somehow the American Dream
Fails to mention
The hidden rule
Of family succession

Where your parents are
Is most likely where you’ll end up
If you’re born in the lower class
Out of grasp is the golden cup

With every institution
Working against their odds
Its hard for them to retain
And hold decent jobs

They receive less education
With little hope of success
A problem the upper class
Has no want to address

Except by limiting their education
Which makes the good jobs unattainable
Leaving them to the wealthy
Whose lives are already sustainable

The American Dream
Also fails to bring to light
For everyone that succeeds
Another shall struggle with life’s fight

The chances of overcoming low status
Is far and few between
You most likely stop where you start
Social classes unwarranted routine

Although society blames THEM
For their miserable situation
I believe the fault
Is of that of our nation

Just take a second to listen
To what I’m trying to say
Although you can’t change the world
Someone’s life, you may

Stop judging those
Who helplessly roam the streets
Try to imagine your life
Born in their feet

They don’t deserve
You taunting glares
Or your judgment
Leave that to the man upstairs

They are better people
Than many I know
Compassionate and caring
An endless personality plateau

To which your wealth
Could never compare
Their admirable qualities
Hidden and rare

Yes Brianna. You used poetry wonderfully to bring your message across. I come from Australia where people do stay on job search for a period, but this is going to be reviewed and I bet we will have many more homeless people. My Son is a documentary maker and is one entitled 'Without a Home' brings their plight into focus for all to see. Some people are severely depressed and do not have the strength or know how to succeed. Another documentary he has done is about a Bonsian boxer called a 'Fighting Chance' where this man helps the aboriginals in our streets. These people need compassion and love. Well done.....I admire your drive! Karin Anderson

A beautiful write. This is something I've thought about a lot. To hear something I've thought about for a while put into a poem so clearly and beautifully is really awesome!

It has become much too common for some to blame the poor for their own plight. As you so astutely note in this very compassionate and dignified poem, these people are often at the mercy of just plain ole bad luck or are victimes of some unforeseen circumstance, such as a dibilitating and expensive medical condition. As a famous folk song of the 60's used to say: 'There but for fortune go you and I.' Often if they are alcoholics or drug abusers, it's because their problems are just too hard to bear and they have nobody to help them. It is encouraging that young people such as yourself are concerned with the less fortunate, especially in these dark times when even those with money are worried. Keep up the good work.
