He prefers flat countryside and nothing much to happen in life. He likes mild-mannered people, not colourful types, and his favourite colours are gray and brown (the colours I like least) .
His wife, 'a vivid girl from the mountains, asks him why he chose her. He realizes that there are some things which admirable women, like her, do not understand.
The poet and his wife like different things, have different tastes: there is no logical explanation.
William Stafford read the poem in a slightly higher tone, with a noticeable Midwest accent. Very clear too.
