(untitled #34) Poem by bob barci

(untitled #34)

He sits alone
in the back room.
Quietly, he enjoys his lunch
of a fish filet and ice cream.
From where he sits
he can hear the others
who are still busy at work.
He listens to the many conversations.
Young man begins to sing Italian songs
and stops to proclaim -
“I’m a black woman stuck in a white man’s body! ”
Spanish woman sings the song she hears on the radio -
in her native tongue.
Someone yells - “Lobby Rush! ” -
even though the lobby is empty.
Customer is angry
for not getting what she wanted.
He is pleased with the silence in the back room.
He doesn’t have to deal with the people up front.
Woman making more noise than the rest,
demands quiet for her headache.
Boss shouts out his orders
and hopes it gets done.
Still,
he sits in the back room
enjoying the silence of the room
and what he can hear.
Now and then,
someone from the front
sneaks into the room
for a brief visit.
His friend says angrily -
“I’m the only one working here! ”
The office girl yells out -
“Damn this computer!
It won’t give me the responses I need! ”
Up front,
everyone yells at once,
while, in the back room,
he sits alone,
and disappears into the silence.
