Us - Poem by Aparna Chatterjee

What is it
In us…
That makes us
Kind towards
Some animals
But cruel towards

The cats,
The dogs and
The hamsters
Are born
To be
Petted by

The chickens,
The lambs and
The pigs are
Destined to be
Killed by us.

Is this nature’s
Law of survival
Or the deeds of

God forbid,
In our next
If we are
One of these
We’ll look up to
‘Humans’ to save
And spare us.

A thoughtful poem and commentary on our conflicting consciences. Well written. (Report) Reply
