Wake Up! Poem by Danielle Bettke

Wake Up!

Stay in bed, curled up, motionless, focusing only on your breathing,
Looking up, seeing white, seeing texture, seeing nothing.
Getting up, getting dressed, slowly, focusing only on how the clothes slide against your skin,
Making coffee, smelling sweetness, focusing only on the drip, drip, drip,
Looking down into the cup, seeing brown, seeing ripples, seeing nothing.
Looking out the window, looking at snow, feeling cold, focusing only on the flakes of silver floating from the sky,
Tilting the cup of coffee to your nose, placing a hand to the window leaving a print,
Blowing out hot air, steaming up the window and writing your name, smudge,
The day seems so lifeless, cold, naked and bland! Seeing nothing,
The roar of a truck startles you, jumping to your tiptoes, a drop of coffee splashes out from your cup,
Looking around the corner you spot it coming, chugging, sliding, accelerating,
Heart quickens, hands get clammy, head spins and you run,
Run to the door,
Slid on your boots, quickly, focusing only on how the rubber slides against your skin,
Looking down at the snow, seeing white, seeing texture, seeing everything!
