Walk The Path I Paved For You Poem by Ellen Shaw

Walk The Path I Paved For You

Footsteps fall
along the path laid out
Eyes glaze over and spirit dulled.
Walk.
Walk.
Walk girl walk.
Stop your dreaming
get your head out of the clouds
and walk the path I paved for you.

Far away lands
deserts of rock and sand
watching sunrise
with kohl lined eyes
date palm trees
dust lined streets
red sky at night
falcons in flight
men in thobes
and robes
women in twos
black abayas hang loose
the call to prayer
calling me back there.

keep your eyes down
watch where you are going
not where you have been
walk.
walk.
walk girl walk.
stop your dreaming
get your head out of the clouds
and walk the path I paved for you.

Camel Races
hidden faces
Kabsa
Tamar
picnics on the floor
leave your shoes at the door
sand dunes
and crescent moons
sandals on feet
kisses to greet
Salam Alaikum
Here I come
the call to prayer
calling me back there.

You walk your path
and I will walk mine
we cannot walk together this time.
You go forward
and I shall go back there
to where
I feel the call to prayer.
