Watching You Walk Away Poem by Amanda Lukas

Watching You Walk Away

I watched as you walked away from me,
just as those before you had done.
You cited your reasons
and I am forced to accept them.
Not the usual 'it's not you, it's me'.
This time, the fault is all mine.

I can't keep a songbird in a cage
solely for the purpose of hearing its song
and claim to love it.
A true lover wouldn't dare.

Helplessly, I watch you walk away
and wipe tears from my eyes.
Silently, I ask myself
how somebody can love me
when I can't even love myself.
