We Are Only Mere Mortals Poem by Francis Duggan

We Are Only Mere Mortals

We are only mere mortals on us a use by date
And the hands of time keep turning and time on none does wait
So we may as well enjoy life and make the most of every day
For all seems quiet and lonely where the dead people lay,
We all have got our crosses heavy or light to bear
And sadness is prevalent where laughter it is rare
Though one can be quite lonely where laughter it is loud
And the loneliest person you will find is amongst the noisy crowd
And the saddest person in the crowd is the one none wish to know
For only a true friend will bother to try to cheer you up when you are feeling low
The one who has a sour face others ignore in passing by
But if you are a happy person your friends they multiply
And since we are only mortals why shorten our lives with stress
The greatest gift one can have is the gift of happiness.
